SAGER GUIDELINES

Powering Inclusive and Equitable Research

The Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines offer practical tools and recommendations to integrate sex and gender considerations throughout the research process. They support researchers and institutions in improving research quality and impact, while helping to close the gender evidence gap.

Sex and Gender

Core Definitions

Clear distinction and systematic reporting of Sex (biological attributes) and Gender (socially constructed roles and behaviors).

Background Research

Existing Evidence Review

Review and synthesize existing evidence on sex and gender differences relevant to the research question.

Research Design

Inclusive Methodologies and Data Collection

Study design should include sex and gender considerations, with gender-balanced sampling and appropriate methodologies.

Research Findings

Data Disaggregation and Analysis

Results should be disaggregated by sex and gender, with sex and gender-based analysis performed.

Interpretation

Limitations and Conclusions

Accurate interpretation of findings with clear acknowledgment of limitations and appropriate conclusions.
